Phone Scam alert in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Office of the Fayette County Sheriff is warning people of a phone scam.

Investigators say the caller identifies himself as Deputy Sheriff Tommy Bailey with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and claims the person missed jury duty and now has an oustanding warrant.

The caller then informs the person they must pay a fine or they’ll be arrested immediately.

The person is asked to buy a pre-paid or re-loadable money card and then provide the “deputy” with the card number over the phone to pay the fine.

Don’t fall for it. This is a scam. The Office of Sheriff advises everyone to be cautious of calls that request payment or access to personally identifiable information, regardless of who the caller claims to represent.

The Office of Fayette County Sheriff would never ask someone for money over the phone or threaten anyone with arrest for not paying a fine.

If you receive one of these bogus calls, DO NOT SEND MONEY! Contact the Office of Fayette County Sheriff immediately at 859-252-1771.
