People opposing waste transfer facility in their neighborhood

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- On Friday a community took their concerns to the government center opposing a waste transfer facility that might move into an old recycling center off Leestown Road.

There are emotional opinions and arguments on both sides of this issue during the meeting on Friday.

The room was packed and filled mostly with people from the Meadowthrope neighborhood that was against the trash.

Republic services, a private trash collector wants to use the old Wise Recycling Center Facility on Lisle Industry Road as a garbage transfer station.

Trash would be collected there before being taken to a landfill by semi truck daily.

But Republic Services needs approval from the Urban County Board of adjustments.

People living in the Meadowthorpe neighborhood which is about a half mile away from the proposed site don’t want it.

They’re worried about noise, increased traffic and smell.

A city planner with Lexington says waste transfer facilities, like the one proposed are some of the most highly regulated ordinances.

But he believes republic services meets county requirements and has a good plan

The board of adjustments has the final decision but again that meeting. We will bring you the latest when it becomes available.
