Parts of U.K. Student Center torn down for renovation & expansion

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Cranes are at work on the U.K. campus in Lexington. The school is tearing down parts of the Student Center to make way for a $175 million renovation project.

U.K. will tear down the Student Center additions from 1963 and 1982. However, it will not tear down the original Student Center from 1938.

Student Center Executive Director John Herbst says, "The current Student Center, as much as everybody loved it, is just simply an outdated facility and it needs to be updated, and it needs to be expanded. We simply could no longer handle the demand for meeting space, and for banquet space, and for special events space."

The school says the renovations should be finished in early 2018. Once the expansion is finished, the facility will be 140-thousand square feet bigger.
