Parents react after Clay County Public Schools cancels spring break due to missed school days

CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Clay County Public Schools has announced the cancellation of its upcoming spring break, a decision that has sparked frustration among some parents and students.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, school officials stated that spring break, originally scheduled for March 24-28, has been canceled due to the excessive number of missed school days. Superintendent William Sexton said the decision was made to ensure students receive adequate instructional time.

The cancellation, announced just two weeks before the planned break, has left some parents frustrated, especially those who had already made travel plans.

“I had a trip planned. That trip’s not going to happen now, or it’s going to have to be pushed to something else,” parent Charles Collett said. “We’re going to have to do something else because we had our full spring break planned.”

The post also outlined additional calendar changes, including an extension of the school year. Instead of ending in May, the last day for students will now be June 3, while teachers will finish on June 9.

Some parents have suggested alternative solutions, such as longer school days or Saturday classes, to make up for the missed time without canceling spring break.

ABC36 reached out to Superintendent Sexton for comment but was told he was unavailable.
