Panel discussion scheduled for African-American encyclopedia

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — "The Kentucky African American Encyclopedia," a new release that’s already won the 2015 Thomas D. Clark Medallion, will be discussed by a panel at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville.

The 551-page book was seven years in the making, edited by Kentucky State University professor emeritus Karen Cotton McDaniel, University of Kentucky history professor Gerald Smith and Western Kentucky University professor John Hardin. The Lexington Herald-Leader ( ) says then-UK president Lee Todd provided financial backing when the project was launched in 2008.

Urgent fundraising appeals were necessary at times. Smith says the final cost was about $400,000, with more than 150 researchers and authors involved.

The Filson Historical Society and the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville will present the panel discussion at 6 p.m. Wednesday. For reservations, call (502) 635-5083.
