One dead in Winchester apartment fire; Neighbors share what the saw
WINCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ) – One person is dead following a fire in Winchester.
The Winchester Fire Department says the fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Monday at an apartment on Main Street between Hill Street and Holly Avenue.
Firefighters say the person was found after the fire was put out.
A neighbor says he watched firefighters get the apartment’s door open and says all you could see was a cloud of smoke.
Then, he says he saw the victim and it was traumatizing.
A few neighbors tell ABC36 that it was a man who lived at the apartment.
“I couldn’t imagine anybody seeing the stuff that was going on out here. I hope everybody prays for him and his family because he was a good guy and didn’t deserve it,” said Cameron Watkins, neighbor.
Billy Owens lives nearby and he says he saw everything. He struggled to describe what happened, but says he’s trying to recover from what he saw.
“It’s been an experience that’s for sure. I’ve never been through something like this before and it’s just been, it’s been terrible,” said Billy Owens, neighbor.
The fire was contained to the apartment and there were no other injuries or damage to nearby apartments.
Firefighters say the cause of the fire is unknown right now.
No details were released on the victim.
