One dead after tanker truck overturns in Letcher Co.

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Mountain Eagle newspaper says an Ohio man is dead after the tanker truck he was driving overturned and crashed through a guard rail Wednesday afternoon.

The newspaper says the crash happened on Sand Hill at Gordon around 1:30 p.m. The road was expected to be closed for several hours.

The crash is still under investigation, but officials told the newspaper the truck lost control going down the steep grade on KY 160.

The newspaper says the truck overturned on a curve and skidded across the highway. It came to a rest in multiple pieces on a hillside.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County coroner. The man’s name was not immediately released.

The truck was a single-unit tanker carrying waste oil and grease. It was not clear yet whether the tank was leaking, however officials told the newspaper that some diesel was spilled from the truck’s fuel tanks.
