Off-Duty Fireman Rescues 12-Year-Old from Icy Pond
A 12-year-old boy was apparently trying to catch frogs around a pond on Sherborne Place when he suddenly fell in. A neighbor saw it happen, and quickly called 911.
Lexington Battalion Chief Brian Wood said he was taking his daughter to a movie when he heard the call come through his radio.
Wood said he new the area, so he drove over to help out. He was the first to arrive.
It’s believed the 12-year-old was in the water between five to eight minutes, with the water reaching past his neck.
Wood said he knew if he didn’t get to the boy soon, he wouldn’t survive.
After Wood rescued the still-conscious child from the icy pond, the boy was rushed to UK Hospital.
He has since been treated and released.
When asked about saving the child’s life, Wood humbly replied, "I was just doing my job."
