Nice Tuesday ahead of another round of rain
Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Tuesday! Nice conditions are in the forecast for your Tuesday after a rainy start to the workweek. High pressure will be building in from the west. This means skies will clear out, and we’ll see some sunshine by the afternoon. Temperatures will rebound nicely, reaching the mid-to-even upper 50s for southern Kentucky—warmer than normal for this time of year!
However, this break in the active weather will be short-lived. A new system is already on the way, bringing more clouds and showers back into the region late Tuesday night.
Wednesday: Rain Returns
The next round of rain will move in early Wednesday morning, tied to a stalled boundary. While it will be mostly rain, there could be a couple of rumbles of thunder during the afternoon, especially in southern Kentucky.
Highs will stay mild, climbing to the low to-mid 50s. The rain will taper off by Wednesday night as the front finally moves east.
Thursday and Friday: Colder Air Moves In
After Wednesday’s rain, temperatures will start to drop behind the front. Thursday will be cooler, with highs in the mid-to-upper 40s and drier weather for most of the day.
By late Thursday night and Friday, a clipper system will bring another round of precipitation. This time, temperatures will be cold enough to allow for a mix of rain and snow showers by Friday afternoon and evening.
Friday Night into Saturday: Snow Showers Possible
As colder air pours into the region Friday night, any lingering precipitation will change to snow showers. While significant snow isn’t expected, there’s a chance for light accumulation—mainly on grassy areas and the highest elevations of southeastern Kentucky.
Travel impacts will be minor, but watch for slick spots on bridges and overpasses as temperatures drop into the 20s Friday night. The best chance for a light dusting (up to an inch) will be in the higher terrain of southeastern Kentucky.
The Weekend: Much Colder Air
The weekend will bring a blast of winter air. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will struggle to reach the low-to-mid 30s, and overnight lows will dip into the teens and low 20s.
Next Week: Cold Start to the Holiday Week Ahead of a Warm Up
Temperatures are expected to stay colder to start next week, with highs struggling to climb above freezing and lows staying well below freezing. We are expecting a pattern flip with above average temperatures eventually returning by the end of the week, into the weekend following Christmas.
