New Vista unveils “A New Day Dawning” mural

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – On Tuesday, New Vista in Lexington unveiled a mural on its Mechanic Street location to represent recovery from substance use and awareness to mental health.

The Mechanic Street clinic offers recovery assistance, mental illness services, outpatient therapy and psychiatry services.

The mural titled ‘A New Day Dawning’ was created by Kentucky artist Casey McKinney.
President and CEO of New Vista, Dee Werline says the mural was a partnership with LexArts, and hopes it sends a positive message that there is help out there to improve your life.

“To represent the positive nature of getting help and services for behavioral help and substance use issues uh which we’ve provided in this building since 1975” said Werline.

Casey McKinney was selected from a pool of artists who submitted their mural proposals in 2020.


LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – In partnership with LexArts, New Vista will dedicate a new mural titled “A New Day Dawning,” painted on their 201 Mechanic Street location in downtown Lexington.

The mural, created by Kentucky artist Casey McKinney, shines a positive light on recovery from mental health and substance use for the entire Lexington community.

“We are excited to share this new mural with the downtown Lexington community,” says Dee Werline, New Vista President & CEO. “Our mission is to help clients from every walk of life achieve recovery and see the good ahead in their lives. We hope this mural will be a focal point for recovery and bring awareness to mental health or substance use services happening every day in our downtown Lexington location.”

New Vista has been part of the downtown Lexington community for many decades. The Mechanic Street clinic offers Medication Assisted Recovery, Serious Mental Illness services, Recovery Services for Families, outpatient therapy and psychiatry services, The Drop-In Center for homelessness services for mental health, substance use, housing and employment support services.

“Art – no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply observe and enjoy it – is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people,” says LexArts President and CEO, Ame Sweetall. “Just as the arts have been proven to promote physical healing and well-being, we now know that the arts can promote positive change on a number of other levels, including mental health and substance use issues.”

A mural dedication ceremony will be held 4 p.m. May 18.

New Vista is the nonprofit Community Mental Health Center, with regional offices located in Lexington, serving 25,000 Kentuckians in 17 central Kentucky counties.
