New video: Neighbors react to train derailment in downtown Harrodsburg
HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – New video shows the scary moments a train derailed in Mercer County.
The tracks in Harrodsburg are clear after the train went off the tracks around 5 p.m. Thursday. A train could even be seen going by Friday afternoon.
“That’s the first one I’ve seen today,” Alexander And Royalty Funeral Home President Larry Sanders said.
Sanders provided the video that shows the moment the train went off the tracks. It was caught on his surveillance camera.
“I’m surprised it hasn’t happened more often,” Sanders said.
Sanders said the toppled cars hit his neighbor’s porch and damaged his roof. He said the situation shook his neighbor up.
“Thank goodness there weren’t chemicals or anything like that,” Sanders said.
Gretchen Winzeler lives just down the street. She said it seemed to her like the train was going faster than usual and abruptly stopped in front of her home.
“All of a sudden it just screeched and the train stopped in front of my house,” Winzeler said.
She said it was gone by the time she got up at 6 a.m. Friday.
“A lot of my friends called to make sure I was okay,” Winzeler said. “I’m just glad they got it cleared out.”
12 and 14 year-old Kaylee Reed and Braxton Hensley said their aunt was caught in the detour traffic following the collapse.
“We were at our house and our aunt pulled up from the other direction,” Hensley said. “She normally comes this way.”
The pair couldn’t use their usual route to go to the park Thursday, but they said they’re glad no one was injured.
Everyone agreed officials worked hard to get the mess cleared quickly.
“It just amazed me that they got done in the amount of time that they did,” Sanders said.
There’s no word yet on what caused the accident.
