New Black Panther Party Forming in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- “Black power. Black power. Black power. Black power,” members of the New Black Panther Party chanted Saturday in Lexington.

The members were visiting the city from several different states. They say they are in the process of creating a new chapter in Lexington. The new Panthers say it is something they chose to do after hearing about an alleged racial assault of two teenage girls in Lexington last month.

Community leaders say the city and the justice system have mishandled the case, and are blocking the girls from getting justice.

“… Not responding to justice properly does bring about a consequence and all we’re trying to do is avoid that consequence when justice is denied. Anarchy comes when justice is denied,” Student Minister, Damon Muhammad, said at the Panther rally.

In response, a city spokeswoman said the city has nothing new to add beyond what they have previously said about the alleged assault.

Last month, the police chief released a statement saying the department wants the investigation to be thorough. The mayor also released a statement then saying,  the city and the police have taken the case and the issues that surround it very seriously.
