Near record highs possible later this week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Good Morning Kentucky! We are tracking hot temperatures all week long. It wasn’t too long ago we were talking about record low temperatures, well we are going to be pushing record high temperatures in a few locations later this week. We are going to remain dry through the mid-week before scattered rain and storm chances increase by your Labor Day weekend as a cold front approaches from the west which should usher in some more seasonable air by the time next week rolls around.
Very Warm Start to the Week
We start your week with our third straight 90 degree day. Thankfully the humidity won’t be unbearable today, that won’t be increasing until your mid-week. Tonight we will fall into the mid-to-upper 60s, not too far above our average low temperatures.
Mid-Week Heat
Temperatures really begin to climb Tuesday into Wednesday. Most of the region will be approaching the mid-90s. This won’t be record warmth for many of us, though Jackson should reach near their record highs which are 92 on Tuesday and 93 on Wednesday. There is a small chance northeast Kentucky may sneak in a shower or a storm to break the heat, but outside of that the rest of the area will be staying dry.
Heading into Labor Day Weekend
Thursday should be the hottest day of the mini heat wave. Afternoon highs may push the upper 90s in spots. We will be close to the record high of 98 in Lexington, though we may just be a degree or two below that mark. Friday will still remain hot but there will be the chance of late day showers and thunderstorms. As of now, we are keeping this an isolated-to-widely scattered chance. It will be worth watching for week 2 of the high school football season.
A frontal boundary will be pushing through the region Saturday into Sunday. This will again bring a rain and storm chance. For Kentucky’s first game of the season on Saturday it’s too early for specifics. There will be rain and storm chances, though as of the current forecast, they are expected to be isolated-to-widely scattered. It’s all going to come down to the timing of the front to whether the game will be impacted by any rain.
Behind this front there is expected to be a bit of a cooldown with temperatures falling back into the 80s for Sunday into Labor Day. This near-to-below average temperature trend should continue into the first few days of September as well. Stay with the ABC 36 Storm Team for more updates.
