Near record heat ahead of storm chances

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! We are tracking another hot day out there across the region. The hottest temperatures today will once again be over the northern half of the area, while southern and southeastern Kentucky will be a few degrees cooler. Upper 90s will be possible in some spots today, which is reaching close to daily record highs.
One change to the forecast from today and the previous two days. There is a low end, Level 1 Severe Risk out for areas north of I-64. Most of the storms will stay north of the Ohio River, but we can’t rule out a few of those storms reaching our far northern counties. It’s a low end threat, but it’s still there late day and into the evening hours. This will lead to another warm overnight with overnight lows in the upper 60s and low 70s.
Thursday has the potential to be the hottest day of the entire summer for many areas. Afternoon highs will once again be climbing into the mid-to-upper 90s, leading to the peak of this heatwave. There will also be the low end chance of some pop-up storms fueled by the heat and a bit more humidity. Most locations, once again, will be staying dry though.
Friday will be another hot one but there will be an increased chance of late day storms. Isolated-to-scattered showers and storms will be possible during the late afternoon and evening hours on Friday. This could impact some high school football games across the region.
The rain chances increase Friday into Saturday as a cold front slowly works it’s way into our area out of the northwest. This will eventually bring us some cooler conditions by next week. But, before then we have to get through scattered showers and storms to start Labor Day weekend. The front will be pushing into the Bluegrass on Saturday, increasing the storm chances.
The exact timing of this front will make or break our forecast for the Kentucky football game Saturday evening. A quicker moving front could give us midday and afternoon rain and storms, before dropping a lot of the activity into southern Kentucky by the evening hours. A slower moving front would increase the chance of rain and storms for game time. Make sure you are staying with us for more updates on the UK football forecast.
This front will exit the region on Sunday, leaving us with a few lingering showers and maybe a storm or two. The cooler air won’t work in immediately behind the front either. We will stay in the low-to-mid 80s on Sunday, before the more refreshing feel arrives for Labor Day on Monday. Near-to-below average temperatures are expected for the first week of September. Most locations will be sitting in the upper 70s and low 80s, with overnight lows back into the upper 50s and low 60s.
