NAMI Lexington is offering virtual support groups for those feeling alone
LEXINGTON, KY. (WTVQ) – The National Alliance on Mental Illness in Lexington created Participation Station ten years ago to bring people together who have had bad experiences in the community due to their behavioral challenges.
It’s where they can be themselves with no judgment, but because of COVID-19 they can no longer participate in person.
David Riggsby, a Program Director for NAMI Lexington, says they have seen people make positive changes in their lives because of Participation Station.
So, when they needed to temporarily close on March 15th, they didn’t want people to feel abandoned, that’s when they began creating video meetings through zoom online.
They are offering some of their most popular groups including WRAP, the Wellness Recovery Action Plan which teaches people how to develop their own plan to stay well; Mind Matters which is a faith-based group that teaches how to use your spirituality in recovery; PS BE Social, which is an opportunity to virtually get together and just talk to each other.
Riggsby says right now they are also offering an anxiety workshop and support groups for those who are feeling especially tense these days.
“It is absolutely critical that folks take care of their mental health, as well as their physical health. It’s amazing the relationship between your emotional state and your health. We feel like this is a very important time to be very cognizant of the need to take care of yourself emotionally,” Riggsby said.
He says the turnout has been great so far for these free zoom meetings that are open to the public.
In addition to the meetings, NAMI has expanded the hours of their warmline which is a telephonic peer support line for people that just need to talk to “someone who’s been there.”
That number is (877) 840-5167 and it is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m to 4 p.m and Monday through Saturday 5 p.m to 9 p.m.
You can access the links to their groups on their website and on the NAMI Lexington Facebook page.
