My Old Kentucky Home features Victorian mourning practices

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (AP) – My Old Kentucky Home State Park is offering a special tour of Federal Hill that focuses on Victorian mourning practices.

Federal Hill is a historic home that is the subject of the Kentucky state song “My Old Kentucky Home.”

Through the end of the month Federal Hill will be draped in black, in accordance with 19th century mourning customs.

According to the park, social customs of the Victorian period encouraged practices that publicly demonstrated the grief family members were experiencing after a death. That included black draping over door knobs and entries, mirrors and portraits of the deceased. Other customs included stopping clocks at the time of the loved one’s death.

The tour is offered 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
