Murdered nuns to be laid to rest Monday morning
JACKSON, Miss.(WTVQ)- The funeral for two nuns that were murdered at their home last Thursday will be held Monday morning in Jackson, Mississippi.
On Sunday more than 300 people came to a small church in Lexington, Mississippi to say farewell to Sister Margaret Held and Sister Paula Merrill. Merrill was with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth out of Nelson County, Kentucky.
There was an outpouring of grief for these two women whose deaths shocked the community they served.
The nuns worked as nurse practitioners in a clinic about 10 miles from their home in Durant. The two were found stabbed to death at that home on Thursday.
Both were 68 years old.
During Sunday’s vigil — people spoke about the nun’s work among the poorest of the poor in Mississippi and how much they will be missed.
Police have made an arrest in the murders. Rodney Earl Sanders, was taken into custody late Friday. Authorities say sanders confessed to the killings during questioning.
They have not said anything about a possible motive for the killings.
