Multiple severe weather chances ahead
Meteorologist Jordan Smith has your Sunday evening ABC 36 Storm Team forecast
Lexington, Kentucky (WTVQ – ABC 36): Good Sunday evening everyone and Happy Easter! It is a day that started with some thunderstorms and seen warm and windy conditions the remainder of the day. We are now fully focused on Monday and Tuesday as multiple rounds of severe weather are possible with one potentially being significant Tuesday afternoon/evening. First things first is our threat on Monday. We will start the day calm and mild.
Thunderstorms become widely scattered during the afternoon and evening.
Strong to severe storms are possible with a “MARGINAL RISK” (level 1/5) and “SLIGHT RISK” (level 2/5) out for central and eastern Kentucky. Damaging winds, large hail, and torrential rains are the main concerns but there is a small tornado threat.
Tuesday is the main day and could turn into a significant severe weather event across Kentucky. An “ENHANCED RISK” (level 3/5) is already out for pretty much our entire viewing area. This is rare for the SPCA to issue this high of a risk 3 days in a advance. The last time they issued one this far in advance for us here in central and eastern Kentucky was back in 2019.
The exact timing is a work in progress but odds favor our severe threat coming during the afternoon and evening. ALL MODES of severe weather are possible including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.
One thing that “could” save us from this getting to out of hand is if morning rain/thunderstorms works the atmosphere over and it doesn’t have enough time to recover fully before our severe threat moves in. If that doesn’t happen, odds favor we are in for a significant severe weather event. Heavy rain is also going to be an issue the next two days, especially in central and northern Kentucky.
That is where a FLOOD WATCH is in effect from Monday evening – Tuesday evening.
Behind all of this comes MUCH colder air with chilly rain showers Wednesday turning to snow showers Wednesday night into Thursday. WOW!
Please make sure you stay up to date through it all with the ABC 36 Storm Team both on-air and online! #kywx
