Muggy and hot to start the week with a looming severe risk

Warm Monday with only a few isolated storms

Monday starts with areas of patchy fog and low clouds, especially in places that picked up rain on Sunday. The fog will gradually burn off during the morning, giving way to a mix of sunshine and clouds.

The afternoon stays hot and muggy, with highs reaching the upper 80s to lower 90s. While most of the Bluegrass will remain dry, a few isolated showers or thunderstorms could pop up during the afternoon and evening. Any storms that develop should stay below severe limits.

Monday night remains warm and humid, with temperatures only falling into the low to mid 70s.

Tuesday brings the risk for severe weather

Tuesday is shaping up to be the most active weather day of the week as a cold front sweeps across Kentucky.

Temperatures will quickly climb back into the upper 80s and lower 90s, while humidity remains very high. Heat index values could approach 100 to 105 degrees in parts of central Kentucky before storms arrive.

By Tuesday afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected to develop along the approaching cold front. The Bluegrass region has the greatest chance of seeing severe weather, with damaging straight-line winds expected to be the primary threat.

However, we can’t rule out large hail or even an isolated tornado if a few storms are able to develop ahead of the main line. Heavy rainfall and frequent lightning will also accompany the strongest storms.

The exact timing will determine both the severity of the storms and how hot temperatures become before the front arrives.

As of Monday morning, a Level 2 and 3 Severe Weather Risk exist across the region. Stay weather aware through the day and have ways to receive alerts.

Much cooler weather arrives for the rest of the week

Once Tuesday’s storms move out, the weather takes a refreshing turn.

Wednesday through Friday will feature lower humidity, comfortable nights, and afternoon highs mainly in the upper 70s to mid 80s—several degrees below average for late July.

Dry weather is expected through the end of the workweek, making for a pleasant stretch after the recent heat and humidity.

Warmer temperatures begin returning next weekend, along with a slight chance for a few showers or thunderstorms.
