Mother of student recalls I-75 shooting
'Mom, there's an active shooter, we're ducking down, I love you.'
LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Families are recalling the terrifying moments surrounding Saturday’s mass shooting on I-75 near Exit 49 in London, Kentucky. One mother, Lisa Wood, shared her emotional experience as her 13-year-old daughter was stuck in traffic on a school bus during the incident.
Wood told ABC36 that her daughter, who was returning from a band competition in Berea, was caught in traffic when the shooting occurred.
“The first thing that my daughter told me in a message was they were stuck behind a wreck,” Wood recalled. “She messaged me again, but I didn’t see it because I was driving. Then she says, ‘Mom, there’s an active shooter, we’re ducking down, I love you.'”
Wood, who was driving southbound on I-75 ahead of the bus, pulled over further up the road after hearing from her daughter. Overcome with worry, she described her feelings of panic and helplessness.
“When I found out, I was like panicking, because I was like, ‘What do I do?’ There was a loss of what to do,” Wood said.
Although she saw a large police presence as she drove past Exit 49, Wood said she does not recall hearing any gunshots.
The community continues to react to the tragic incident, with investigations into the shooting still underway.
