car accident Saturday morning just inside Lewis County from Rowan County.

According to Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt, at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a family of four were traveling north on Route 377 just inside Lewis County near Thomas Cemetery Road when the operator lost control of the 2020 Nissan and struck a tree.

The 2-year-old, Kyler Underwood, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lewis County Deputy Coroner Amanda Gaydos Clark.

Kyler’s mother, 27-year-old Chastitty Underwood, was taken to St. Claire HealthCare by EMS where she was pronounced dead by Northcutt.

A five-month-old girl was taken to St. Claire Healthcare and then airlifted to UK Medical Center. The driver of the automobile was not hospitalized, Northcutt said.

The accident remains under investigation by Lewis County Deputy Sheriff John Byard.

Agencies assisting were Kinniconick Vol. Fire Dept., Route 377 Vol. Fire Dept., Portsmouth EMS of Vanceburg, Morehead & Rowan Co. EMS and Rowan & Lewis County Coroners Offices.
