Mother charged with stealing car, leaving son outside

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 20-year-old woman has been charged with car theft and child abandonment after she allegedly stole a car from the Hope Center Monday and left her 4-year-old son behind the center.

Jahaira Rivera remained in the Fayette County Detention Center on a $1,500 surety bond as of Tuesday afternoon.

According to the arrest citation, at about 5:30 p.m. Monday, Rivera took a 2009 Ford Edge from 1524 Versailles Road and drove it to the 1510 Versailles Road. The car belonged to the Hope Center. The keys had been left inside momentarily, according to the police probable cause.

When she took the car, she left her 4-year-old son behind the Hope Center, where he was found along a tree line not far from Versailles Road. Police said the child was in danger by being as close as he was, according to the citation.
