Morning storms give way to afternoon break before more rain moves in for Tuesday

A Stormy Start Gives Way to Sunshine

We kicked off the day on a wet and stormy note across Central and Eastern Kentucky as showers and thunderstorms moved through during the morning hours. Rainfall totals generally ranged from around a tenth of an inch up to just over a quarter inch in some spots.

As we moved into the afternoon, those showers lifted out of the region, giving way to increasing sunshine. With that sunshine and a steady southwest breeze, temperatures are quickly warming back into the upper 70s and even near 80 degrees for some locations. Overall, we’re in for a pleasant and quiet evening to wrap up the day.

Quiet Start Tuesday Before Storms Return

Tuesday morning will start off calm and mild, with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s and partly clear skies. However, changes begin to move in as we head into the second half of the day.

A cold front approaching the region will bring back the chance for showers and storms by midday and into the afternoon. While you may catch a few dry breaks at times, expect multiple rounds of activity to develop as the day goes on.

Storms Increase Tuesday Night Into Wednesday

The most active period looks to arrive Tuesday evening and especially overnight, when showers and storms become more widespread. A strengthening low-level jet will help pump moisture into the region, allowing for periods of heavier rainfall and gusty storms.

Rainfall totals are expected to range between 1 to 2 inches, with some localized areas potentially picking up more than that under heavier downpours.

These storms will come in waves, meaning there will likely be breaks in between, but overall it will be a wet period.

Stalled Front Keeps Showers Around Wednesday

As we move into Wednesday, that cold front slows down and may briefly stall across parts of the region. This will keep scattered showers going through much of the day, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours.

By later Wednesday into Wednesday night, we’ll begin to see a gradual drying trend as the system finally pushes out of the area.

Cooler Air Moves In Behind the System

Once the rain clears out, noticeably cooler air will settle into the region. Afternoon highs will drop back into the 60s, which is below average for early May.

Looking ahead, we’ll see some improvement heading into the weekend with fewer rain chances, although a few isolated showers can’t be ruled out at times.
