Morehead native named new commander of hometown KSP Post

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 23-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police has been appointed as the new Post Commander for Post 8 in Morehead.

Captain John Dowdy started his career with the KSP in 1998 as part of Cadet Class 75 and served at Post 8, Morehead as a Trooper until 2004. He is originally from Morehead, but has made his home in Flemingsburg where he is involved with youth sports in Fleming County. Dowdy is married and has two children.

In 2004, he was promoted to sergeant and served at Post 2, Madisonville and Post 12, Frankfort.

In 2006, Dowdy was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to Post 1, Mayfield, Internal Affairs Branch, Frankfort and Post 8, Morehead.

He was promoted to captain in 2017 and served as the commander of the Internal Affairs Branch in Frankfort. In 2019, he was the commander of Drug Enforcement & Special Investigations East Branch.

Dowdy received the Kentucky State Police Citation for Meritorious Service for Valor in 2015.
