More details released in fatal motel shooting

FLORENCE, Ky. (AP) — A coroner says the person killed after a shooting involving police at a northern Kentucky motel was a 16-year-old boy.

The Boone County coroner told The Kentucky Enquirer (http://cin.ci/1zrfnSd) that Richard Lee Patton Jr. was from Covington and had attended Holmes High School for a few weeks in September. It did not list a cause or a manner of death.

Police say Patton shot at an officer who came to the Super 8 motel in Florence to investigate a report of drug activity. The officer took cover and returned fire, suffering a minor injury in the process.

Police have said it’s unclear who fired the shot that killed the teen. They did not release any new details Thursday.

The motel, which closed immediately after the shooting, has reopened.
