19-year-old ‘Good Samaritan’ killed in apparent hit and run near Berea

BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – A 19-year-old recent high school graduate being a Good Samaritan was killed Wednesday morning by an apparent hit-and-run driver.

Thomas O. Boshears, of Berea, died of multiple blunt force trauma, according to Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.

The accident was reported at 4:37 a.m. on U.S. 421 near Red Lick Road in the Big Hill community just east of Berea.

Boshears was southbound on U.S. 421 on a moped when the moped apparently had mechanical issues. He stopped in the southbound lane and put the kickstand down, according to Cornelison. A passing car apparently clipped him as he stood by the moped, throwing him several feet into a ditch. The vehicle did not stop.

Cornelison said several cars apparently passed the scene with some blinking their lights and going around the moped which was still in the travel lane. A man finally stopped when he noticed a shoe and then reported the incident, Cornelison said.

Investigators aren’t sure why the man didn’t move the moped to the shoulder or go a short distance to a nearby house, according to the coroner.

The man was on his way to help a relative start a vehicle, Cornelison said, citing what the victim’s grandmother told investigators.

The area was very dark — “Zero dark 30” — and it was raining, Cornelison said of the area. According to the victim’s grandmother, he had just completed his senior year, the coroner said.

The collision remains under investigation by Madison County Sheriff Deputy Adam Quiles. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 859-623-1511 or by contacting Madison County 911 at 859-624-4776.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by Madison County EMS, The Kentucky State Police, Madison County Coroner’s Office, and the Red Lick Fire Department.
