Monday kicked off Keeneland Yearling Sale

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The world’s largest and most important auction of its kind kicked off today here in Central Kentucky Monday.
Thousands of young horses are up for bid at the 72nd Keeneland Yearling Sale. The who’s who of horse racing were out looking at horses and buying the next potential derby or breeders cup winner.  And at least one sold for a million dollars.
Yearlings are sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars all simple on potential.  They’ve never raced before so they’re being bought based on their physical appearance and pedigree.
This auction is used as a barometer to check how the thoroughbred industry is doing. Keeneland says so far things are looking great. And says even more people than usual are interested thanks to American Pharaoh.  The sale runs through next Saturday with a Dark Day on Thursday.
The fall racing meet starts October second with the breeders cup shortly after that.
