MLK Day Events And Closings

Here is a schedule of some of the events in the area to honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior as well as planned closings on the King holiday:

  • 21st annual Unity Breakfast at 6:30 a.m. in Heritage Hall West at the Lexington Center.
  • Chalk for Justice at 8:00 a.m. in Heritage Hall on the lower level.
  • MLK Freedom March at 10:00 a.m. beginning on the lower level of the Lexington Convention Center on West Main Street.  Commemorative program begins at 11:00 a.m.  Keynote speaker is Susan L. Taylor.  The event is free.
  • MLK Day at the Carnegie Center, 251 West Second Street from 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.  There will be lunch, live music, guest speakers, a group service project, interactive family activities and a showing of Dr. King’s inspirational speeches.  The event is free.
  • MLK Day at Berea College at 1:00 p.m.  March to Phelps Stokes Auditorium departing from Dining Services where a community sing is scheduled followed by a MLK Day Convocation.
  • Free screening of ‘Red Tails’ at the Kentucky Theatre at 214 East Main Street in downtown Lexington at 2:30 p.m.  Cuba Gooding, Junior stars in the story of a squadron of black pilots, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, who battled racism and discrimination as they fought in World War II.  Local historian and expert in Tuskegee Airman history, Ron Spriggs, will introduce the film.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Service at Midway Presbyterian Church at 107 N. Turner Street in Midway at 7:00 p.m.

MLK Day Closings in Lexington:

  • Government:  City and state offices closed
  • Fayette County Health Department:  Closed
  • Libraries:  Closed
  • Mail:  No delivery
  • Circuit Court:  No proceedings
  • District Court:  No proceedings
  • Lexington Recycling Center and Haley Pike Waste Management:  Closed
  • City trash collection:  Residents who normally receive Monday pick-up will be serviced on Wednesday, January 21.
  • Lextran:  Regular schedule
