Miner dies days after accident in Harlan County

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Bell County man has died following a coal mining accident in Harlan County last week.

The state says 48-year-old Felix “Matt” North suffered injuries in the May 22 accident at the Rex Coal Co. mine CVB#1 in Cumberland.

North was positioning a machine’s cable and water line when the rib (wall) unexpectedly collapsed, crushing his lower body, according to the state.

The mine was shut down and remained closed until May 28, when the Division of Mine Safety approved an action plan submitted by the mine.

The state began an investigation on the mine in April. It says that investigation is ongoing.
