Mild Thursday ahead of rain-to-snow Friday

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

Happy Thursday everyone, we are tracking mild temperatures once again today. Afternoon highs will peak in the mid-to-upper 50s before a weak cold front swings through later in the day. This brings a quick round of a few lighter showers and breezy conditions. This front will drop our temperatures tonight and set the stage for another tricky forecast on Friday into Friday night.

Friday Into Friday Night

An area of low pressure will move through Kentucky Friday into Friday night. This will likely bring a period of rain, followed by transition over to a quick round of snow that could result in minor accumulation for some. The best chance of light accumulation will be north of I-64 into northern and northeastern Kentucky. The chance of accumulating snow drops the further south and west that you go (i.e. Lake Cumberland region and south-central Kentucky).

Chance Of Measureable Snow

There is still uncertainty around where and when we will see the transition over to snow. If the system tracks further to the south as some data suggests, this would lead to a quicker transition to snow for the I-64 corridor, leading to a better chance of seeing accumulation. If the system tracks further north, this means slightly warmer air will delay the transition to snow. This will lead to a slower transition to snow and will lower accumulating snow chances. Regardless of the scenario, travel is expected to be difficult late Friday evening into the overnight.

Wind Chill 1

We are expecting a quick shot of cold air for the weekend behind this system. Wind chill values will drop into the teens both Saturday and Sunday morning. If there is light snow on the ground this weekend, Sunday morning’s temperatures will drop into the upper teens and low 20s as skies clear out. However, this is short lived. Sunday afternoon we will return to the 40s, with low 50s in the forecast for President’s Da and into early next week.
