Message of Hate

On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a day meant to celebrate equality and unity, some people in Pulaski County woke up to a message of hate.

Flyers in zip-lock bags, weighted down with rocks and allegedly from the KKK, were put along driveways of several neighborhoods.

“I got to reading it and it was trying to recruit people for the KKK,” said Sheila Spaw who lives on Woodland Trail in Somerset and had a flyer at the bottom of her driveway.

ABC 36 reached out to the Kentucky KKK and called the national hotline listed on the flyer but have not heard back from either.

Shock, fear, disbelief, even anger are just some of the feelings in the neighborhood.

“I just never would have expected something like that to happen,” said Sue Wolsey, who got a flyer.

“I’m nervous for the people in the neighborhood because it shouldn’t be happening,” said Melissa Houston who also got a flyer in her driveway.

“Some of them are deathly afraid to come over here and talk about it,” said Spaw about her neighbors.

The flyers weren’t limited to Woodland Trail.  The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said it’s gotten calls from concerned neighbors throughout Somerset and the county.

“It would be nice to know why these bags are being left on people’s driveways,” said Houston.

“It’s scary,” said Wolsey.  “What’s really going to happen tomorrow, what’s going to happen the next day, what’s going to happen with our kids.”

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said no one has been hurt and no property has been damaged.  It is continuing to look into the flyers.
