Mercer County jailer blames unsafe van for prisoner escape

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Mercer County sheriff blames a poorly equipped transport van for the escape of a prisoner May 12, 2017, according to a report in The Harrodsburg Herald.

“I drive two vans that don’t provide safety to the inmates or the public,” Jailer Bret “Chambo” Chamberlain told the newspaper.

The report says Jailer Chamberlain was transporting 25-year old Evan Paul Goodlett, of Harrodsburg, to the Boyle County Detention Center when Goodlett reportedly kicked out a window, jumped out of the moving van and ran across four lanes of busy US 127.

The newspaper reports Goodlett was restrained, wearing a leather belt with handcuffs that forced his hands up by his armpits, at the time of his escape. Goodlett was recaptured.
