Mayor selects Joe Smith as new 2nd District councilmember
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Mayor Jim Gray chose Joseph “Joe” Smith as the new councilmember for the 2nd District on Friday.
“Joe is well prepared to be a Councilmember. He has been active in his neighborhood, in public service and is a Lexington native who cares about his hometown,” Gray said. “He brings energy and experience to the Second District seat.”
Smith has worked as a realtor for 30 years, and spent 10 years in banking. He is also the former president of Townley Park Homeowners Association.
“I am excited and looking forward to the opportunity to work with and represent the people of the 2nd District,” Smith said. Smith and his wife, Sharon, have three children and five grandchildren. He holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky.
Smith will fill the seat vacated by Sasha Love Higgins, who resigned following her indictment on felony charges of identity theft, forgery, and theft by deception.
The council has a 15-day window to overturn Smith’s appointment, which would require a vote.
