Mayor Gray wants review of Confederate statues in Cheapside Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Lexington Mayor Jim Gray wants a review of two Confederate statues in Cheapside Park.

The park has statues of John Hunt Morgan and John C. Breckinridge. Both were Confederate generals during the Civil War. Breckinridge was once Vice President of the United States.

Gray is asking the Urban-County Arts Review Board to look into the placement and presentation of the statues. This comes during a national debate over confederate symbols, including the flag.

Gray says, "Our goal is to respect our authentic history, while also respecting diversity and inclusion. We are adapting and adjusting to current times, current issues and current challenges.”

The Urban-County Arts Review Board reviews proposals for visual art in public spaces. The mayor says he has asked the board to set up a community meeting to address the statues.
