Mayor to announce nominee for vacant Urban County Council seat
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Mayor Jim Gray is scheduled to announce Friday morning his nominee to fill the vacant 2nd District seat on the Urban County Council.
The announcement is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the lobby of the Government Center at 200 East Main Street.
The council seat has been open since last month when 34-year old Sasha Love Higgins resigned following her indictment on felony charges of identity theft, forgery and theft by deception.
Investigators say while general manager of a Hampton Inn in Lexington, Higgins set up a payroll account for an employee who no longer worked for the company and continued getting paychecks in that former employee’s name totaling more than $4,200 after taxes, according to court documents.
Lexington Police received video and photos of the person receiving the money, and that person was later identified as Higgins, according to the criminal complaint.
Sasha Love Higgins has pleaded not guilty.
Higgins had never held public office before defeating two-term incumbent Shevawn Akers last November. Akers said publicly she would accept the appointment if Mayor Gray asked her to fill the remainder of Higgins’ term, which runs through December 2018.
The 2nd District includes Georgetown Street, the Manchester Street corridor and western downtown.
