Mark Taylor Found Guilty in Murder & Kidnapping of Alex Johnson
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)-After a long day of testimony, the jury took came up with a guilty verdict.
Mark Taylor kept a straight face when the judge read aloud the jurors signed verdict. Taylor was found guilty of murder, kidnapping, and tampering with physical evidence in the death of Lexington Chef Alex Johnson.
The trial then moved into the penalty phase where the Commonwealth brought Alex’s mom to the stand one last time where she recounted the 31 miserable days between the time Alex disappeared and when he was later found him in a barrel in the Kentucky river. The Defense also brought several family members to the stand. In the end, the Defense asked jurors to consider the minimum sentence of 20 years for kidnapping and 20 years murder to be served at the same time. The Commonwealth argued for a life sentence.
After a few hours of deliberations jurors recommended the judge give Taylor 22 years for Johnson’s murder, 22 for his kidnapping, and the maximum 5 years for tampering with physical evidence, a total of 49 years. Taylor’s sentencing is set for July 22nd.
