Man seriously injured in accident that triggers gas leak

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police say a man suffered life-threatening injuries when the pickup he was driving hit a gas meter and a tree on Tates Creek Road Thursday night. Investigators say the man was driving outbound on Tates Creek near Cottage Grove when he tried to pass another vehicle, lost control and crashed.

He had to be extricated from the pickup. Police say the man was alone in the truck. His name wasn’t released. The accident happened at 10:48 p.m.

Police say when the truck hit the gas meter, it triggered a gas leak that led to a strong odor of gas in the area. Police say no evacuations were necessary. Columbia Gas responded quickly to the scene to repair the leak.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU).
