Man killed in crash while fleeing constable

MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A West Point, Ky., man was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving while fleeing a constable.

According to the Kentucky State Police, at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, troopers in Bowling Green were requested to respond to South Dixie Highway — U.S. 31W — near the intersection of L and N Turnpike (KY 335) in reference to a fatal collision.

A preliminary investigation revealed a Hart County Constable attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on US 31-W, troopers said.

The Monte Carlo fled, causing the constable to lose sight of the car near Rowletts Road. The vehicle continued north on US 31-W where the driver, 34-year-old Michael E. Johnson, of West Point, Ky., lost control of the vehicle near Ky 335.

Johnson was ejected after the vehicle struck an earth embankment and overturned. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hart County Coroner. He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

The investigation is being led by Trooper Mike Wathen. He was assisted on scene by Hart County Sheriffs Department, Hart County EMS, Hart County Coroners Office, Munfordville Fire Department, Horse Cave Police Department, and other KSP personnel.
