Madison County Jail Overcrowded

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky’s prison population is growing and the Madison County Jailer says his detention center can’t keep up.

The Madison County Detention Center is certified for about 180 beds but it has nearly double that number of inmates.

Jailer Doug Thomas says 85-90% of those inmates are there for drug-related charges.

“I don’t think I ever thought it would be this overcrowded,” said Thomas.

He has inmates sleeping on mats on the floor because there aren’t enough beds. Plus Thomas says he pays nearby jails to house about 40 inmates to help with overcrowding.

A task force created by the judge executive wants to build a rehab center and the jailer believes in having those types of programs at the jail, he’s seen them work in other communities but right now he says he needs more space. “

“For me to offer any programs like that to work out of a facility we have to get a bigger building,” said Thomas. “I think it could work in this county also but we have to have a bigger building to put these people in and to work these programs.”

The task force says a new 600-bed building would cost $40 million.
