Madison Co. students back safe after D.C. trip

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – Students in Madison Co. have returned home safely from a trip to Washington, D.C.  The students were at the Capitol when a man armed with a gun walked in, and eventually was shot by police.

The students arrived back in Richmond at midnight.

Spring Break in Madison County just began this week, and there’s little doubt it’s one the middle school students here will never forget.

Amy Vanover is a history teacher at Madison Middle school.  She says her class takes a trip to Washington, D.C. every year to learn more about government and American history.

The students were scheduled to visit the capital around 3:00 p.m. Monday.  Vanover says some of the group were going through security when police say a man walk in with a gun.  She says security guards told them to duck and take cover.

Vanover says she’s proud of her students being calm through all that was going on.

Student are expected to return from spring break on Monday.
