Madison Co. shooting case to be handled by Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Larson has been selected by the attorney general’s office as prosecutor in a Madison Co. shooting case in which a Lexington man, 29 year-old Jesse Gibbons, was allegedly shot by police.

Gibbons reportedly assaulted Lexington police officer James Winter back in September, then ran off.  Investigators say they chased him to Richmond, where he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a wooded area off the Eastern Bypass.  According to state police, that’s where Gibbons was shot.  The names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released.

Madison Co. Commonwealth’s Attorney David Smith was the original prosecutor in the case, but recused himself over conflicts of interest. Larson will now have to decide whether a Madison Co. grand jury will hear evidence about the case.
