LPD posts new routine to help prevent car thefts

Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — Lexington Police have seen more than 100 car thefts since the beginning of November.

“We did have 108 police reports for car break ins,” said Sergeant Guy Miller, the Supervisor of the LPD Public Information Office. “So there are people out there trying car door handles and trying to take valuable items out of your vehicles and that’s something we want the community to be aware of.

Those reports span from November 1st to November 28th and while it may be a lot, according to Sgt. Miller those numbers stay pretty consistent.

“It averages fifty a month. So it’s right on par, but there’s also more valuables this time of year that can be taken out of the vehicle.”

Not all car thefts involve broken windows, but if a thief can see that valuable item?

“They might take that opportunity to break the window and take that valuable item. Now, if they’re not seeing anything in plain view then their probably going to be trying that car door handle. And if they can get in then their going to get in and rummage around your middle console or your glove box and see what they can find.”

Police are encouraging everyone to participate in their 9 p.m. routine, now that it is getting darker earlier and the holiday season is here.

LPD will be posting their routine checklist every night on their Facebook.

The checklist consists of six items: lock all exterior doors to residence, lock car and remove valuables from vehicle, put away outside equipment, tools and toys, close blinds or curtains and shut garage doors, turn on an outside light and empty mailboxes and retrieve packages.

“Again we’re all human. So we all might forget to lock the door and this is just a friendly hey double check and make sure it’s locked up.”
