LPD: Man assaults officer, starts fire at local business

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Lexington Police arrested a man they say he tried to rob Video Max on Winchester Road, leading to a fire and an assault on a police officer.

Police say the man arrested is 25-year-old William Spears.

Police say just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday, Spears entered the store and told the clerk he had a gun.

They say he then attempted to reach over the counter when the clerk stopped him, leading to a chase throughout the store.

Police say Spears went to the warehouse area of the store and started a fire with a book and a t-shirt.

They say the clerk was able to put the fire out quickly.

Police say Spears tried to escape from the scene but an officer was waiting outside the business.

Spears scuffled with the officer but was arrested, according to police.

Spears is charged with assaulted on a police officer, arson, robbery, and resisting arrest.

He is scheduled to appear in court on those charges Monday.
