LPD: Mailbox Blown Up Outside Home

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A mailbox was blown-up outside of a home on Victoria Way late Wednesday night, according to Lexington Police.

The homeowner told ABC 36 News at the scene that she and her husband were watching television around 10:45 p.m., when they heard a loud popping sound like a gunshot outside of their house.

She says when they looked outside, they saw smoke and their mailbox scattered all over the street, still smoldering.

She says the blast shook the screen door on the house.

Lexington Police say the department’s Hazardous Devices Unit is trying to determine if it was a firecracker or some kind of homemade bomb that blew up the mailbox.

A bomb sniffing dog was brought in to aid in the investigation.

Police say it’s too early to know if the home was targeted or if it was a random prank. So far, it appears to be an isolated incident, according to investigators.

No one was injured.

An arson investigator with the Lexington Fire Department is also investigating.
