Local man wins free groceries for a year
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington man is celebrating winning free groceries for a year.
Lenny Church, an overnight stocking employee at Kroger’s Chinoe Road location in Lexington, didn’t believe he’d won when he and his wife first received the email.
“I wasn’t thinking I was going to win. I thought I’d just, you know, enter it, have a shot at it, so. But when I got the email, I was a little sketchy about it and said ‘well, I’d better look into it more,’ so I did. I sent everything in, and here I am,” said Church.
Church and his family won groceries through the Kroger #CommunityImmunity Giveaway, which is meant to encourage Kroger shoppers and employees to get their COVID-19 vaccination. All who were able to prove vaccination were eligible to enter the giveaway, which gave those who entered opportunities to either win one of five $1 million dollar checks, or one of fifty “free groceries for a year.” The giveaway ran from June 3, 2021 to July 10, 2021, with winners selected weekly.
Wednesday, Church’s own Chinoe Kroger presented him with the 52 $250 gift cards, one for each week of the year.
The Church family has three boys, two of which are teenagers and live at home. They say the free groceries are a huge help.
“They go through a lot of food and a lot of drinks and all that good stuff. They’re 16 and 12, and then we have a 24 year old that’s not at home. They definitely go through all the snacks and the drinks…it’s a lot of food,” said Church’s wife, Penny Hisel-Church.
According to one of Church’s store managers, his win is well-deserved.
“He does a wonderful job, and I think it’s just super exciting for him and his family to have this opportunity, um, all together, and we’re just really, really excited for him,” said Chinoe Kroger store manager Carol Snider.
Church is one of just two Kentucky #CommunityImmunity Giveaway winners.
