Local elementary school students recognized by National PTA

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two Dixie Magnet Elementary students have gained national recognition in the National PTA’s 2020-21 Reflections cultural arts program, of which the theme was “I Matter Because…” King El-Amin won the Award of Merit in Film Production for “Black Boy Joy.” Zaria Barber received the Award of Merit in Music Composition for her work titled “Breonna Taylor.”

The National PTA collected around 900 student entries in all the arts categories and honored over 200 young artists.

Additionally, numerous students from Fayette County Public Schools earned state-level acknowledgements in the Kentucky PTA Reflections competition. Ainjini Patra from Tates Creek Middle School won the Rising Star Award and Self-Esteem Award. Many other students won awards in the following categories:

Dance choreography

  • Primary: Olivia Moynahan of Glendover, overall winner and Award of Excellence
  • Intermediate: Aoi Tadachi of Wellington, Creative Interpretation Award and Award of Excellence
  • Middle school: Harper Bone of Leestown, Award of Excellence

Film production

  • Intermediate: King El-Amin of Dixie, overall winner and Award of Excellence
  • Middle: Bhumika Rana of Leestown, Award of Merit

Literature

  • Primary: Lily McCaffrey of Picadome, overall winner and Award of Excellence
  • Intermediate: Jax Thompson of Stonewall Elementary, Award of Excellence
  • Middle: Naren Nandanoor of Beaumont, overall winner and Award of Excellence

Music composition

  • Primary: Becca Boles of Wellington, overall winner, Creative Interpretation Award, and Award of Excellence
  • Intermediate: Zaria Barber of Dixie, overall winner and Award of Excellence

Photography

  • Primary: Kumar Chetan Puli of Rosa Parks, Award of Excellence
  • Intermediate: Cecilia Meehan of Stonewall, overall winner, Creative Interpretation Award, and Award of Excellence
  • Middle: Elissa Lawnd of Beaumont, overall winner and Award of Excellence

Visual Arts

  • Primary: Evelyn Jarvis of Dixie, Award of Merit
  • Intermediate: Jax Thompson of Stonewall, Award of Excellence
  • Middle: Bhumika Rana of Leestown, Award of Merit
  • High school: McKenna Sun of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Award of Merit

The Reflections program promotes creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate through their school’s PTA or PTSA.
