Local couple bringing new bourbon experience to Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Sean and Tia Edwards have made history with their company Fresh Bourbon Distilling Company by becoming the first African Americans to make Kentucky bourbon since slavery.
“We didn’t set out to do that. We didn’t know that going into the process,” said Sean Edwards. “It’s crazy to us. But we were excited that the state decided to recognize us for that.”
Married for 11 years, they said the idea started after talking with people during their travel adventures.
“I’m born and raised in Lexington, Tia’s from Louisville. And they know three things about Kentucky. They know Kentucky Fried Chicken, they know horses and they know bourbon,” said Sean.
In 2017 they set out to build a brand which Tia calls a, “completely new flavor profile unlike anything on the market.”
According to Tia, their second primary ingredient is honey malt.
Even the design of the bottle is unique, something Tia said was their goal when creating it.
“We really wanted to come up with something that’s classy and edgy that was going to stand up on the shelf,” said Tia.
The couple also hopes to bring a new distillery to the Lexington area with a Vegas feel. Sean said they hope to make an announcement about the location this fall.
As for the bourbon, Tia said you can expect to see it on store shelves starting next week in Total Wine and Liquor Barn.
“The story sells the first bottle, what’s in it sells the second,” said Sean.
