LFUCG: Stormwater project to ease flooding in neighborhood

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Flooding has long been a problem for some people who live in the Joyland neighborhood. Several streets, and sometimes homes, flood during heavy rainfalls. That situation is changing. The city is spending $2,852,926 to increase the capacity of the stormwater system.

Cabot Drive, Kent Drive, Allen Drive and Rogers Road will benefit from additional storm drains, larger drainage pipes and an underground culvert that collects and temporarily holds rain runoff.

“Residents are eager for the project to be completed so they can enjoy their neighborhood, even in the rain,” says Sixth District Councilmember Angela Evans. “For years they have experienced streets flooding and have a sense of panic wondering if they could safely drive down the street or what other damage the water might be doing to their properties.”

The work, which is being done by Bluegrass Contracting Corporation of Lexington, is scheduled to be complete in early November.

“Joyland is a quiet neighborhood with a wonderful history, so for them to know the city is finally addressing the flooding issue reassures them that their community hasn’t been forgotten,” Evan says.
