Lexington Rescue Mission to assist in recovery in Louisiana

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Rescue Mission is packing up to take supplies to its sister mission in New Orleans to help hurricane victims.

The Lexington Rescue Mission is taking about six staff and residents to assist their sister mission, The New Orleans Mission, which was hit hard and is low on supplies after Hurricane Ida hit the area Sunday.

The mission is bringing two trucks and one trailer full of snacks, water, hygiene supplies, bleach, and masks.

“The women’s facility is very low on supplies. They have no power, so no air conditioning, and there are hundreds of ladies who are there. So we are trying to help alleviate that,” said Lexington Rescue Mission Executive Director Laura Carr.

The mission is also bringing 24 air conditioning units to be installed in The New Orleans Mission’s women’s facility, and extra generators to the men’s facility.

“We had our air conditioner unit at our men’s house go out this summer during the hottest week of the year, so we know what it’s like to have a bunch of residents without power in the sweltering heat, except theirs is exponentially bigger than ours was,” said Carr.

Carr says that even though it’s a long trip, volunteers immediately wanted to help when they knew The New Orleans Mission needed it.

“As soon as we got that call for help yesterday, immediately they responded and they were like, ‘we want to go, we want to help,'” said Carr.

The volunteers will also be assisting in any landscaping needs, clearing away tree limbs and brush from the destruction.

“This is a situation that needs rescue, so our goal is to do what we can, and try to help rescue some folks that really need the help in their time of need because we know people have reached out to us in our time of need,” said Carr.

The volunteers are scheduled to leave tomorrow morning and will be back on Monday.
