Lexington Police Department: Holiday safety tips
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s a three day weekend for a lot of people for Labor Day.
As many people know, this means more traffic, and more police patrolling.
Kids off from school, some parents off from work, means lots of people getting on the road.
Some good news for drivers, according to AAA gas prices right now are the cheapest for this holiday weekend compared to the last three years.
The national average coming in at about $2.59 and some gas stations around Lexington have prices listed as low as $2.30.
Sergeant Ronald Keaton said because Labor Day is an extended weekend it means more calls to police too.
“People like together and have fun so when that happens, unfortunately, a lot of times folks don’t always get along so we get busy not just in a traffic sense but also just in the volumes of calls that our officers get dispatched to. disorders and family disputes and domestic violence and those kinds of things,” Sergeant Keaton said.
He said with all the ride-sharing apps available, it’s worth the money to get a safe ride.
“The best thing to do is call a ride, call one of the ride services or a taxi or even call the police department and ask for a ride before you get in the car and drive drunk,” Sergeant Keaton said. “It’s not that big of a deal for us to do that.”
He also said give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination so you don’t become an aggressive driver.
Sergeant Keaton said try to stay off of your phone and pay attention, if you see someone driving recklessly, safely contact the police department.
